This site is about pet help in the way of your pet's health. Everyone is concerned with pet health care, but few are aware of todays options for pet immunization. As in people, pet immunizations are very important for general pet health and longevity. But please let me introduce myself first. I need to establish my credentials with you so you have some idea of who I am why I know what I know about pet health. This site is intended primarily for people who already know me, but some people who do not know me will read this site, and need to know something about me. But the primary purpose of this site is so I don't have to tell the same thing repeatedly, often to the same friends, about helping their pet. This particular subject matter on pet health care takes some thought, so I suggest you bookmark this site so you can return easily later. If you do not know me: I am Captain Joseph H. (Cass) Forrington. I graduated Cum Laude, 33rd out of 222, from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1972. I have an IQ of 141. Kings Point is a Federal Academy just like the academies for the Army at West Point, Navy at Annapolis, Coast Guard at New London, and Air Force at Colorado Springs. I was a midshipman in the Navy while there and graduated with a Bachelor Of Science Degree and an Ensign's Commission in the Naval Reserve. Bobby Kennedy nominated me for appointment. Kings Point has graduated two of our astronauts. I spent 27 years at sea, 14 as Master (Captain), travelling all over the world. I have been in over 50 countries on every coast of every continent and to within 600 miles of the North Pole. Lord, what a wonderful world!

This Ship Was My Last Command

I retired in 1998 and have been involved in different things since. My latest endeavor can be viewed by clicking on the "Symbol of Unity" links at the top of the page. Anyway, several years ago I had reason to start investigating the Human Immune System and this taught me a lot about our pets' health because they are very similar to us in many ways. Indeed, all mammals share similar immune systems because we are made of the same basic components. All living creatures are made of only 20 Amino Acids, so all animals are basically the same. So that is who I am, and Pet (or animal) Health, in particular biotechnology as it relates to the immune system in pet and animal health care, is the subject matter I am discussing here. If you have pets and are concerned with their health, you should find this interesting. I am not a Doctor, Human or animal, but I have had medical training above the level of an EMT. This is because we have to rely primarily on ourselves for medical treatment at sea. I was Medical Officer, as Chief Officer, for 5 years, and supervised the Medical Officer for 14 years. So please don't rely solely on what I am saying here. I have no degrees in biotechnology or medicine. I provide link sources below that will give you good places to investigate at a deeper level. This is only my personal understanding from what I have researched and studied. I am definitely not advocating a "cure" or treatment for any disease. I am talking about our pets' immune health and the role of their Immune Systems in their general health, as I personally understand it. So please do further research on your own. When I began my research I knew that a weak immune system, as in AIDS, was bad because it allowed us to be invaded and get sick. What I didn't realize was that our own immune systems could attack us. When this happens it is called an "autoimmune" disorder. For instance, Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system attacking the joint membranes. The obvious conclusion here was that unless our pets' immune systems are "balanced", they are not in good health. The obvious question is, when a pet's immune system is restored to a balanced state, does its problems go away? Obviously so, and, surprisingly, over eighty-five per cent of animal health problems are immune related. Biotechnological research began in earnest in the 1950's when scientists began to develop a way to get mammals other than humans, in this case cows, to produce more human targeted immune components when they were pregnant. Pregnancy was important because pregnant mammals produce heavy concentrations of immune system components just before birth, and they pass this immune support to their newborn in the first feeding after birth. This provides the newborn with additional Passive immunity from whatever is hostile in the mother's enviornment at the time of birth. Additional support is passed in each feeding, but the bulk of the immune support components are passed in the first feeding. The scientists speculated that if they could get cows to produce immune components more targeted at human problems, then they could harvest those components with the "colostrum" from the milk. The colostrum could be administered orally to people, or their pets and other animals, because it survives the digestive process, and it would "nourish" their immune systems. They achieved this by figuring out how to get the cows immune systems to make components that were in response to primarily human problem organisms. They also found that other components generated acted to harmonize, or balance, the immune system, generating additional overall benefits. Although the science and colostrum have been around for a while, the benefits of colostrum have only been enjoyed by the rich who can afford it in doses that do any good. Because colostrum comes from only the first milking after the birth of a calf, it is very rare and expensive. Apparently the scientists didn't consider mass production in choosing their first animal! Large corporations became involved when the health benefits were realized and a route to mass production was realized when they moved the science from cows, mammals, to birds, in particular, chickens. Chickens are now injected the same way as the cows, and they produce heavy concentrations of mammalian, human, dog, cat, etc., immune components that are deposited in the yolk of the egg. Birds deposit more immune support components in the egg than mammals do in their milk because birds only have one shot to help their young, whereas mammals can pass additional support to their newborn with each feeding. This is why human breast feeding has become so important again. Another advantage of the egg technology over mammalian technology is that mammals like cows produce a component labeled IgM by the scientists. This has been known to cause inflammation in humans. Birds produce a different component labeled IgY, which has no known side effects instead. Hyperimmune Egg technology is cheaper because it is easily massproduced because chickens lay a lot of eggs. Cows, on the other hand, take a long time to give birth. So now most people in the West can now afford the most advanced Immune System Health Support for the price of a coffee, and a fraction of that for their pet's health care. All animals are very similar in biological structure. Indeed, all life is derived, made from, just four substances called "peptides". This fact has made these technologies very valuable in veterinary health care and many people are now using the hyperimmune eggs for their pets. Because pets are so much smaller than humans, and they require a much smaller dose for the same health benefits, the cost for pets versus humans is greatly reduced. The same is true for small children. To sum up, I believe there have been major advances in human and animal, or pet, health care through biotechnology in the areas of immune system support. Our pets' immune systems influence nearly every aspect of our pets' health, just as it does ours, including emotional and overall sense of "well-being". You and your Doctor or Vet can find more information in "The Physicians Desk Reference For Non-Prescription Drugs and Dietary Supplements", a book every Doctor has. Most doctors are still ignorant of the technology, however, and I consequently believe a lot of people and pets are missing out on a lot of very high quality health benefits. Many Doctors think that colostrum and hypervalent eggs boost the subject's immune system, making it unsuitable for people with overactive immune systems creating autoimmune problems. This is wrong, though, because these natural supplements balance the immune system and therefore help in autoimmune situations, as well. If you want to know more, and want your Doctor to know more, be sure to send him/her to this Immune System science site to read the clinical trails from Harvard, etc., and research the science. It is unfortunate that individuals allergic to eggs cannot take the hyperimmune eggs, and that people who are lactose intolerant cannot take the colostrum. There is a purified version of the colostrum available for the lactose intolerant, but it is even more expensive due to the extra processing, and not as effective. For these individuals, I recommend, again, strongly, that you check out polysachharides which, while not providing the same immune system components found in hyperimmune eggs, seem to help a great deal by increasing the communcication between the cells of the immune system. These products should also work well for you pets' or animals' health. I'd be taking all of them if I could afford it!
